Message from the Chief
In 1955, at the request of a group of concerned citizens, the Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted to establish the Apache Junction Fire District. From a humble beginning, with little more than two used fire trucks and a dozen volunteers, the fire district has grown with the community over the past 51 years. Today our 90 full time staff members continue to serve the community with the same level of dedication and caring established by our founders.
Led by a five member non-partisan elected Governing Board, the fire district continues to meet the challenges of today's complex fire, emergency medical and rescue environment. The Governing Board, responsible for the overall operation of the fire district, continue to focus on meeting the community's needs of today, while preparing for future challenges. It is through their dedication and efforts, and the efforts of the elected officials who since 1955 have served their community, the fire district continues to excel.
With the fire district now encompassing approximately 62 square miles, and serving a year round population nearing 85,000, response to emergencies and other requests for service are delivered from four fire stations strategically located throughout the district. Serving the City of Apache Junction, and the communities of Gold Canyon, MountainBrook Village, Goldfield Foothills, Superstition Mountain and Superstition Foothills, we continue to strive to meet our citizen's needs as providers of high quality fire protection, emergency medical and rescue services. In September 2006, the fire district’s voters authorized $9.5 million in additional capital improvements through the issuance of general obligation bonds. These funds will be used to further improve the fire district’s emergency response capabilities, and includes the addition of a fifth fire station.
The Apache Junction Fire District staffs four state-of-the-art firefighting / paramedic units 24 hours a day, seven days a week with fulltime professional firefighters and paramedics. These units responded to 7,198 incidents last calendar year. The fire district is a member agency in the valley-wide Automatic Regional Response Agreement. This “automatic aid” system, using satellite tracking and computer aided dispatch technology, delivers the most rapid response to our citizens regardless of political boundaries or jurisdiction. This innovative approach minimizes life and property loss, along with reducing overall service delivery costs.
To make the fire district as efficient and cost effective as possible, highly trained, multi-role personnel are used to deliver firefighting, emergency medical, and rescue services. All the fire district's personnel are certified firefighters. These same employees are also certified paramedics or emergency medical technicians. In addition, emergency response personnel are used for non-emergency citizen service needs such as administering vaccinations, blood pressure screening, CPR training, public education, home and business fire safety inspections, and venomous reptile removal services. In a system designed for high productivity, our employees are able and willing to provide exceptional service in both emergency and non-emergency situations. This is evidenced by their ability to provide Insurance Service Office (ISO) Class 3 rated fire protection services district-wide, even without an established fire hydrant system in nearly 35% of the district. Additionally our Governing Board and employees have built an organization which garnered accreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International. The Apache Junction Fire District is one of only 132 accredited fire departments world-wide and the first and only accredited fire district within the State of Arizona.
Service excellence is the cornerstone on which the Apache Junction Fire District has been built. Our employees, individually and collectively work diligently to ensure each and every citizen receives exceptional service. Whether we are delivering critical life saving measures, or routine non-emergency services, we strive to ensure you and your family will be treated with care and compassion.
